Accurate measurements are the most important step in ordering a custom iron door. Even small errors can lead to installation issues, delays, or additional costs.

Follow this guide to ensure your door fits perfectly and installs smoothly.

How to Measure for an Iron Door

Before placing your order, you need to measure the rough opening — not the existing door.

The rough opening is the structural opening in the wall where the door will be installed.

Always measure:

  • Width (left to right)
  • Height (top to bottom)
  • At multiple points to ensure consistency

If you're unsure, we strongly recommend consulting your contractor or reaching out to our team for assistance.

Understanding Door Size vs. Actual Door

All our listed sizes refer to the outer dimensions of the jamb, NOT the door panel itself.

Example:

A 72” × 81” door means:

  • 72” width = outside jamb to outside jamb
  • 81” height = top of jamb to bottom of threshold

* These are NOT the slab (door panel) dimensions.

Recommended Rough Opening Size

To ensure proper installation, your rough opening should be slightly larger than the door size:

  • Width: + ½” to 1” wider
  • Height: + ½” to 1” taller

This extra space allows for:

  • Leveling adjustments
  • Shimming
  • Insulation
  • Secure anchoring

A proper rough opening ensures your door sits level, seals correctly, and operates smoothly.
